If you’re in the world of equine rehab or just looking for a way to give your horse a little extra support, you may have heard about weighted pastern wraps. But what exactly do they do, and how can they benefit your horse during recovery? Let’s dive in!
🔹 What Are Weighted Pastern Wraps?
These are specialized wraps designed to fit around the pastern (the part of the leg just above the hoof) with added weight to provide resistance. They are often used in rehab or training to help strengthen the muscles and ligaments in the lower leg, improve joint stability, and promote a more natural stride.
🔹 What Muscle Groups Do They Target?
Weighted pastern wraps help to activate key muscle groups in the lower leg, including:
- Flexor muscles of the lower limb
- Extensor muscles around the pastern and fetlock
- Muscles around the hock and upper leg, as the added weight requires the horse to engage its entire limb more fully during movement.
This additional resistance forces the muscles to work harder, which can lead to improved muscle tone and strength.
🔹 Benefits for Rehabilitation:
- Joint Stability: By strengthening the muscles around the joints, the wraps can help stabilize the pastern, fetlock, and even the hock, which is especially important after an injury.
- Muscle Regeneration: Weighted wraps help rebuild and tone muscles that may have weakened due to injury or inactivity.
- Improved Blood Flow: The increased activity can help stimulate circulation, promoting healing and reducing inflammation.
- Reinforcing Correct Movement Patterns: As your horse walks with weighted wraps, it can help them engage their muscles properly, which is crucial in rehabilitating after an injury.
Whether it’s to aid in recovery from a tendon injury, support muscle regrowth, or simply boost your horse’s leg strength, weighted pastern wraps can be a valuable tool in any rehabilitation plan. But remember: always consult with your vet or an equine therapist to ensure they’re appropriate for your horse’s specific condition and recovery needs.
How to Introduce Weighted Pastern Wraps
- Start Light – Begin with the lightest weight available (usually 2-4 oz per leg) and observe your horse’s reaction.
- Short Sessions First – Use them for 5-10 minutes at a walk before progressing to longer sessions or faster gaits.
- Introduce in Hand First – Before riding, allow the horse to get accustomed to the sensation while leading or lunging.
- Gradual Progression – Slowly increase weight over several weeks, ensuring the horse remains comfortable and sound.
- Monitor for Discomfort – Watch for signs of strain, including uneven movement, irritation, or excessive fatigue.
Recommended Maximum Weight
- Front Legs: Up to 200g per leg
- Hind Legs: Up to 400g per leg (hindquarters are naturally stronger)
- Max for Rehabilitation Horses: Stay under 200g per leg unless advised otherwise by a veterinarian or equine therapist.
Using excessive weight can lead to joint strain, muscle fatigue, and incorrect movement patterns, so always err on the side of caution.
Duration & Frequency of Use
- Work Session Duration: 10-20 minutes, increasing gradually as the horse adapts. Avoid exceeding 30 minutes per session.
- Sessions Per Week: 2-3 times per week to allow for recovery between sessions.
- Break Periods: If used consistently for multiple weeks, consider a 1-week break every 6 weeks to prevent overuse strain.
Precautions When Using Weighted Pastern Wraps
✔ Proper Fit – Wraps should be snug but not too tight to prevent circulation issues.
✔ Avoid Sore or Weak Horses – Do not use on horses with existing joint pain, recent injuries, or poor conformation that could lead to strain.
✔ Monitor Movement – If the horse starts dragging its feet or showing stiffness, reduce weight or discontinue use.
✔ Balanced Use – Always use the same weight on all four legs unless working on a specific rehabilitation need.
✔ Remove if Swelling Occurs – If any heat or swelling appears in the legs, stop use immediately and reassess.
Suggested Exercise Routine with Weighted Pastern Wraps

Final Thoughts
Weighted pastern wraps can be a powerful tool when used correctly. The key is gradual progression, proper monitoring, and moderation to avoid strain or injury. If your horse is in rehabilitation or has a history of lameness, always consult with your veterinarian or an equine therapist before introducing weights.
